Dear Editor:

What a wonderful Christmas present the educators, community advisers, and junior class at Boothbay Region High School gave us today.

A well-reasoned and researched civil debate on one of the thorniest issues of our time – gun control.

Under the tutelage of English teacher Mark Gorey, we saw the results of well-researched positions in careful questions and statements articulated thoughtfully by our young people. Both audience and participants were attentive and respectful. These debates have become an anticipated tradition for juniors in Mr. Gorey's classes over the last several years — a great model of free speech in action. Thank you.
