Embrace the change for the future

Tue, 06/28/2016 - 8:30am

Dear Editor:

Lincoln County shares with Piscataquis County the lowest bracket of average weekly income of all the counties in the state. The region needs to move forward, and Paul Coulombe is generously pointing the way.

We teach our children to take risks and to embrace change to be successful in life. A town is no different. The welcoming people of the Boothbay region are its greatest strength. The perpetuation of strong community ties and neighborliness does not need to be mutually exclusive of change. It needs to be an integral part of the plan. I do not know if the region has a comprehensive plan for development, but one should be established. Collaborate to mold the direction and the face of the future for the region. Be proactive not reactive.

The economy in the region is based on tourism. The competition for tourist market share on the Maine coast has become increasingly competitive. Coastal towns like Belfast, Rockland and Kennebunkport have made great strides to attract more visitors. The Boothbay region must consistently and continuously promote and improve itself to remain competitive. The Botanical Gardens provide a new dimension and broaden the visitor base. The development of the Boothbay Harbor Country Club has further focused a spotlight on the Boothbay region. The roundabout enhances safety and beautifies our entrance. Embrace it…do not fear it.
