Edgecomb Column: Meeting time corrected

Fri, 03/27/2015 - 1:30pm

She won it! Hurrah for Nancie Atwell! She has been awarded the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize! Hurrah for the Center for Teaching and Learning! Edgecomb beams upon you with pride and admiration.

Whoa, Nelly! Last week, alerting you to the upcoming Edgecomb Historical Society meeting on March 26 (this very day), did I say 2 p.m.? No, no, no. We meet at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Room of the Edgecomb Congregational Church. Do join us, to hear about major changes for EHS. We intend to stay with the evening hour and the Congo Church location from now on. The change in time will make it possible for more interested people to attend. After the long, hard winter, we are welcoming spring with a busy agenda including a discussion of the Davis Blacksmith Shop and a mystery stone chamber on Mount Hunger. We hope to see you and bring along some friends for a fun and informative evening.

Flowers of the Forest: Let us salute the passing of Frederick L. Kelley and send our deepest condolences to his wife Esther, sons Jonathan and Peter and their families. Also, salute the passing of Polly Luger, our deepest condolences to her spouse, The Rev. William Luger.

Hey, everyone! Last call to serve your town! The deadline for returning nominations papers is Tuesday, March 31, by 5 p.m. Stop in at Claudia's desk at the town hall during office hours, Mondays, 7 to 9 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 5 p.m. Or call 207-882-7018 during these hours.

To date, Stuart Smith and Mike Smith are running for selectman, Deb Boucher and Karen Potter are running for treasurer, and Tom Abello is running for school board. Those are all who have turned in nominating papers so far. Watch this spot!

Mike Smith's daughter, McKenzie, after working for Teens To Trails, has gone on to the Maine Law School, currently number 1 in her class. She wants to specialize in child-related law. Her brother Jack has been attending culinary school in Portland, but having attained chef status, has joined the Army. No, not the camp cook. He is in artillery training at Ft. Riley, Kansas, a distinguished graduate of Advanced Individual Training. With these achievers in the family, Mike says he feels he should also give back to his community, hence he decided to run for selectman.

Don't forget to gather at Edgecomb Eddy Green for its First Friday Coffee, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Friday, April 3. Conversation and comfort goodies with some of our senior neighbors.

More Hurrahs: Among BRHS’ sports stars, we can note Draco Peaslee, coach's award in wrestling and Chris Groneng, most improved on the boys' swim team.

And on the North Yarmouth Academy honor roll, Highest Honors, Parker Elkins, grade 9, High Honors, Morganne Elkins, grade 11, and Jack Lent, grade 8.

Mark Gorey's AP Language and Composition class assignment, "Champions of Change" to learn how to frame a persuasive argument, went technological, creating iMovies about their proposals. His son, Nick Gorey, made one such project, about revamping athletic eligibility requirements in view of changing school class schedules.

Some disappointing news: as of March 1, 2015, only nine out of approximately 165 Edgecomb public school children have taken advantage of the opportunity to get a free annual library card at Skidompha Library in Damariscotta, under the "Hooked on Libraries — Edgecomb" program. Please, parents, note well: Any public school student, resident in Edgecomb, who wishes to receive a free library card at Skidompha before July 1 should visit the library and talk to Pam Gormley, its director. For those not familiar with the national award winning library and its many excellent programs, including programs for children and teens, visit the website at www.skidompha.org/skidomphanew/index.asp. Skidompha Library's hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

I'll be hiding jelly beans in artful places for grandkids to discover when they finally get here, after many a winter visit cancellation! Doing the Easter Bunny Hop at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978 and jocam@tidewater.net.
