Edgecomb Column: Huzzah to the Leones

Tue, 11/25/2014 - 11:00am

Flowers of the Forest: Let us salute the passing of Ted Sasala, a well-known, well-loved neighbor and active citizen of Edgecomb, and send our deep condolences to his wife and extended family. Memorial donations may be made in Ted's memory to the Edgecomb Congregational Church,  P.O. Box 113, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

The welkin will truly ring Sunday afternoon, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m., with The Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble performing "Holiday Music from Around the World" in the Sanctuary of the Edgecomb Congregational Church. Come all ye to enjoy both familiar and exotic holiday favorites.

Huzzah Highway: Bob and Carol Leone were a little surprised to be named the Edgecomb recipients of the Spirit of America Foundation's 2014 Tribute award. And bravo to the Edgecomb Board of Selectmen for nominating them for their 14-plus years of community service. This includes Bob's long-standing chairmanship of the Charles and Connie Schmid Land Preserve Advisory Board, which manages a 1,000-acre parcel and two trail system in Edgecomb.

The Leones are best known for founding Teens to Trails (aka T3), which promotes outdoor recreation activities for teenagers. This organization is a living memorial to their late daughter Sara. It makes grants to local high schools to start outing clubs.

The Center for Teaching and Learning is much in the news. One of the school's missions is to train teachers from other states and even nations in its innovative educational methods. Two of CTL's teachers, Anne Atwell-McLeod and Nancie Atwell, have recently presented a paper at the 2014 Convention of the National Council of Teachers of English, on "Letter-Essays: Engaging Kids in Social and Analytical Responses to Stories."

Meanwhile, back on Cross Point Road, CTL has formed an after-school computer club that not only teaches how to use the machines, but how to take them apart and put them together again! Would that I had had such an education. Kids, watch out for that insignificant little screw that drops to the floor. It's probably critical to the assembly!

These issues of the local papers will land in your mailboxes or on your house steps early due to the holiday. All of you, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday! And Anni, my sister, have a joyous birthday! I am measuring the oven to see if it will accommodate half of a huge turkey we are splitting with friends, and tossing a coin, heads pumpkin, tails sweet potato pie, at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978 and jocam@tidewater.net.
