Three people were taken to area hospitals Aug. 17 after a crash on Edgecomb’s Route 27, near the Route One intersection.

Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle crash at 3:38 p.m.

Robert Latter, 46, of Boothbay Harbor, was driving a 2012 Kenworth refuse disposal truck southbound on Route 27. As Latter rounded a corner, a 2014 Honda Accord driven by Aimee Dempsey, 81, of Plymouth, Massachusetts pulled out from a driveway and into the path of Latter’s vehicle.

Latter applied the brakes, but was unable to stop and both vehicles collided in the southbound travel lane. As a result of the crash, the three occupants of the Honda had to be extricated from the vehicle by rescue personnel.

Dempsey was transported by a Lifeflight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious head and chest injuries.

The other two occupants of the Honda were Robert Dempsey, Jr., 82, of Plymouth, Massachusetts and Suzanne Dempsey, 77, of Williamsburg, Virginia. Both were transported by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland with chest injuries and broken bones.

Latter complained of minor knee pain, but did not seek treatment.

The four were all wearing seat belts; side curtain airbags deployed in the Honda.

The Edgecomb Fire Department, Wiscasset Fire & Rescue, Wiscasset Ambulance Service and Central Lincoln County Ambulance responded.

The primary investigating officer, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Nein, is reconstructing the crash. Sgt. Nein was assisted at the scene by Detective Jared Mitkus, Deputy Ryan Chubbuck, Deputy Chad Gilbert and Sgt. Brendan Kane.

State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Trooper Bernard Campbell and Sgt. Jeffrey Mills responded to conduct an inspection of the commercial vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.

Traffic was detoured at Cross Street until the scene was cleared at 6:11 p.m.
