Drawing workshop with Marcia Sewall

Sat, 06/24/2017 - 8:30am

Artist and award winning children’s book illustrator Marcia Sewall will lead a workshop in drawing at the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset on Saturdays, July 8 and July 15. The class, which is limited to 10 students, age 16 and up, will take place on the second floor of the old Wiscasset Academy building at 15 Warren Street from 9:30 a.m. to noon on each of the two days.

Sewall believes that there is the possibility of making a drawing from anything. With this in mind, her workshop, sponsored by the non-profit Maine Art Gallery, is for anyone who wants to learn to see and to coordinate eye and hand in making a drawing. She loves a quote by the painter Camille Pissaro (1831-1903), “It is only by drawing everything, drawing incessantly that one fine day you discover to your surprise that you have rendered something in its true character.”

Fee for the two-session class is $50 for members of the Maine Art Gallery; $60 for non-members. Participants should bring one large pad of newsprint (rough or smooth), 2 sticks of vine charcoal, and one kneaded eraser.

During her career as an artist and teacher, Sewall has taught art to high school students in the Boston area as well as The Art Institute of Boston, Simmons College, and the Montserrat College of Art. She is a graduate of Brown University and holds a master’s in education from Tufts/Boston Museum School. She has illustrated at least 50 children’s books.
