Discovering Maine grown sea vegetables

Sat, 11/08/2014 - 10:30am

Sea vegetables, grown by Maine Fresh Sea Farms in the Damariscotta River, will be the focus of an evening program Friday at the FARMS Community Kitchen (323 Main Street, above the Rising Tide Community Market), where schoolchildren, teenagers, parents and grandparents from all over Lincoln County are signing up for hands-on cooking classes.

Join sea farmers Peter Fischer and Peter Arnold on Friday, Nov. 7 from6 to 8 p.m. as they introduce the science of sea farming and the joys of cooking with locally grown sea vegetables. The event will feature delicious examples of ways to incorporate sea vegetables into our daily diet.

Maine is a leader in the locally grown food movement, and growing vegetables in the ocean is both a logical extension of this healthy trend and a new farming opportunity for folks that work on the water.

The nutritional value of these plants is widely recognized around the world, but few of us in Maine have much experience cooking or eating them. Maine Fresh Sea Farms is dedicated to broadening the availability of these super foods by growing multiple species of sea plants and making them available year round.

The cost of the class is $15, which includes sampling of a stir fry of sea and mixed vegetables and take-home recipes. To register, leave a message (your name, phone number and name of class) on the FARMS phone at 207-563-1161.
