David Henry Clark, 82, of Orono died April 15, 2015 at a Bangor hospital.

He was a longtime summer resident of Juniper Point, Boothbay Harbor, a treasurer for the Juniper Point Village Improvement Society, and a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.

He was born Oct. 20, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, son of William Henry and Faye Rebholz Clark.

He was educated in Tulsa public schools, earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Oklahoma and master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He joined the Department of Economics at the University of Maine as assistant professor and spent his entire teaching career there, retiring to emeritus status as full professor.

Following his graduation from the University of Oklahoma, he served as an artillery officer in Kitzingen, West Germany, as part of the Post War Occupational forces in the 1950s. It was there that he met his future wife, Barbara Davis of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Together they raised two children, John Howard Clark, now of Easton, Pennsylvania, and Catherine Eastlake Clark of South Portland.

Early in his university career, David was co-leader of a study of the closure of the Dow AFB in Bangor. The report that followed helped lay the foundation for the successful transition of the base that continues today.

His career made a pivotal turn in 1969 when he traveled with his family to Singapore on sabbatical. He worked for the Ford Foundation’s Manpower Project, serving as assistant director of the Economic Research Centre at the National University of Singapore. Over the course of three decades he returned to South East Asia as a specialist in education finance, working for a variety of international aid agencies while on leaves from UMaine. This work took him to Indonesia, Bangladesh, Lao PDR, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his wife, children and a grandson, David Michael Brown of Skaneateles, New York.
