Cynthia Ann Brown Manner, 82, died Dec. 29, 2014 at her home in Boothbay Harbor.

Born Feb. 13, 1932, “Cyn” was the adopted daughter of E.K. and Pauline Brown of Torrington, Connecticut. She attended nursing school in Waterbury, Connecticut. During her education she met a patient, Carl Manner, her future husband.

Carl and Cynthia married in 1955 and moved to Boothbay, where Cyn’s family had summered since 1940. The couple purchased the former drive-in movie theater on Route 27 in Boothbay and opened Carcin’s restaurant at the location. The restaurant’s name was short for Carl and Cindy, but earned her the name “Mrs. Carcin” for years to come. She worked alongside her husband at the restaurant until it eventually burned in the 1960s.

Cynthia then worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. She raised a family with Carl and the two remained married until Carl’s death in 1989.

A 1997 Jefferson Award nominee, Cynthia was well known in the community for her caring and compassionate spirit. There are not many people in the Boothbay region who have not received a card from Cyn, if not a ride to the grocery store or to a doctor’s appointment.

Cynthia was a congregant of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor and a member of the Coastal Club and Senior Citizens. She often led social efforts, and until age 81 could be seen proudly helping her neighbors shovel snow at Harbor View Apartments.

She is dearly missed by her two children, Paula Manner of Seattle, Washington, and Jay Manner and his wife Leslie of Asheville, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Carl III, Duncan, Lucy and Ben Manner; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Brown of Boothbay Harbor; nieces, Elizabeth “Betsy” Brown of San Diego, California, Barbara Brown of Brunswick, and Debra Brown of Westbrook; and nephew, Ted Brown of Boothbay.

Cynthia was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Susan Brown.

She is also remembered with love by Kernan, Jane and Jacob Cross of Boothbay Harbor. Cyn cared for Jacob from the age of 9 months.

A memorial service celebrating Cynthia’s life will be held at a later date, and all those whose lives she touched will be warmly welcomed.

Memorial contributions to support scholarships for nursing students may be made to the Carl and Cynthia Manner Memorial Fund, c/o The First NA, P.O. Box 493, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
