Concussion baseline test mandatory for Boothbay Region High School athletes

Sat, 04/29/2017 - 8:30am

During the next few weeks, Boothbay Region High School will offer the ImPACT Concussion Management baseline testing for all 8th and 10th grade students. The testing is mandatory for participation in any school-sponsored high school sport. It is not mandatory to test 8th or 10th graders who will not be participating in sports, but it is encouraged.

The testing is being done as part of the school’s concussion policy in an preventative effort to help identify and manage concussions among BRHS athletes.

The ImPACT test acts as a pre-season physical of the brain. The computerized exam is set up in a video game format that takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration and is offered free of charge to all students.

To decline testing for a student, please contact school nurse Kate Schwehm, or complete and return the form sent home with a student. If a student opts out of baseline testing and later chooses to participate in a school sport, they will need to make arrangements to take the ImPACT baseline test before being allowed to play.

If you have any questions or concerns about ImPACT testing or the BRHS concussion policy, please call Kate Schwehm at 633-9814.
