Charlotte Nutt safe in Nepal after earthquake

Charlotte Nutt is living in Nepal in Udaypur in the Gaighat region about 200 kilometers east of Kathmandu. The earthquake was very powerful in her area, but the damage was not to the extent that occurred in Kathmandu.

The village buildings are much smaller and often use wood and thatch roofs lessening the earthquake damage.

Nutt is spending a gap year in Nepal before starting college next fall. She has been building a new school and teaching young students. Education is not free in Nepal, which is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Rather than paying for their child's education, parents of the students donate two days of work each month at this school.

Nutt’s school was not severely damaged in the quake, as many of the building are made of bamboo and thatch.

Charlotte's parents, David Nutt and Judy Sandick, live in Edgecomb. They are in touch with Charlotte almost daily.

Charlotte said she feels a sense of helplessness as there is so much to be done in Kathmandu and the other areas that were hit harder.

David and Judy have urged her to stay at the school and do her part there and as the children will need an education more than ever as this poor country starts the long long road to recovery.
