Charlotte I. Druce

Charlotte Irma Harold Druce, 92, died Sept. 25, 2016 in the Gregory Wing, St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor after a 12-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Charlotte was born Jan. 24, 1924 in Roxbury, Massachusetts to Raymond and Myrtle Rice Harold. Charlotte graduated cum laude in 1944 from Mount Holyoke College with a major in physics/astronomy.

Charlotte worked as an electrical engineer for Sylvania Fluorescent Light in Danvers, Massachusetts, and a sonar researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. She and her husband, John Druce, were owners of the Spruce Point Inn in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Charlotte enjoyed loving her grandchildren, loved music especially musicals, identifying birds, taking care and loving her pets, fishing, gardening, walking, as well as enjoying the beautiful view of the ocean and sunsets from her home.

Charlotte served on many community boards including treasurer for the Boothbay Region YMCA. She was also a past president of the Mount Holyoke Club along with many volunteer activities.

Charlotte married the love of her life, John Dix Druce of Boothbay Harbor on June 1, 1946 and they were blessed with 70 years of marriage.

Charlotte was predeceased by her mother, Myrtle Sprague Harold, her father Raymond Paget Harold, and her sister Dorothy Harold Conner.

Left to cherish her memories is her husband John; son, John Dix Druce Jr. and his wife Nancy S. Druce of Trevett and Portland, Maine; daughter, Jennifer D. Fehlau and her husband John Fehlau of Cumberland, Maine; a sister, Ruth Harold Zollinger of Tucson, Arizona and Boothbay Harbor. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kate Fehlau of Cumberland, Molly Druce of Sullivan Island, South Carolina, Jessica Shaver and husband Ben Shaver of Houston, Texas, Page Axley and husband John of Birmingham, Alabama; as well as many relatives of the Harold and Druce family of Maine and Florida.

A service to celebrate Charlotte’s life will be held at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.with the Rev. Dr. Sarah Folger and the Rev. Peter Panagore officiating. Reception to follow the service at the church. Private interment will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
