The Southport Fire Department meets regularly once a month, and more often when updates and training are needed/required.

This time of year we generally don't do much in the way of outdoor training, due to the shortness of the day, but instead, check and repair equipment at the station. Cold-weather firefighting can take quite a toll on engines and mechanical equipment.

During the more formal gathering, upstairs at the station, we often will discuss procedures for emergencies, training schedules, and reviews of recent fire protocols, especially those related to events that have involved mutual aid and interactions with other area departments. Communications with Lincoln County is always a hot topic which often results in some rather challenging discussion. Radio contact is so vitally important when multiple companies are involved.

There is also a generous “feed” provided by one of the members and sometimes a welcomed visit from non-firefighting islanders. Last week was such an event.

Southport Central School sixth graders and supportive adults fed us well as a fundraising gesture for this year's trip to “Adventure Bound” in Caratunk, Maine. Whitewater rafting and rock climbing seem to be high on their list for the exciting May outing.

Amy Hillstrom and April Hurst helped to organize our feast which consisted of warm, filling and wonderful soups including beef stew, venison stew, macaroni-n-cheese, white chicken chili, fish chowder, turkey stew, salad, breads and an array of tasty desserts. The children arranged the place settings, served the food and cleaned up. Many happy firefighters were grateful for a job well done. There were few leftovers!

The students who helped were fourth graders Ella Watts and Harry Hinckley, and sixth graders Andrew Fowlie, Robert Shaw, Finn Harkins and Garrett Hurst. A rousing applause for their efforts topped off the delightful meal, along with a generous contribution for the planned outdoor adventure. Our new school principal, Lisa Clarke, introduced the students and helped oversee the operation, which could not have run more smoothly.

We will be anxiously awaiting news from Caratunk.
