Butterflies flutter to Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library

Thu, 07/02/2015 - 8:15am

Did you know that the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library is now an official migration stop for the monarch butterfly? See the library’s plaque in the beautiful Children’s Garden. To celebrate, attend “Butterfly Heroes,” a beautiful presentation of Eastern butterflies, by Jerry Schneider, “Butterfly Guy,” creator of the award winning “Butterfly Game,” at the library on Friday, July 10, at 10 a.m.

Audiences will learn the how, where and when of the amazing monarch migration, obstacles the butterflies face each fall and spring, as they make their way to and from Mexico, differences between butterflies and moths and how to attract butterflies to our gardens.

After the show, children will create their own butterfly T-shirts (heavy, 100 percent cotton) using a combination of Rit fabric dye sprays, plants, and butterfly cut-outs. Children may purchase T-shirts for $4, or bring their own.

Schneider, a former teacher and children’s librarian, invented The Butterfly Game in 2001. It received a Parents Publication Award in 2004. Schneider is a steering committee member of the Vermont Butterfly Atlas Project, a five-year study of butterfly populations in Vermont. He lives in Hardwick, Vermont.
