Marriage Equality

Bridge vigil held

Sun, 08/05/2012 - 11:30am

The second Bridge Vigil organized by the Lincoln County Coalition for Marriage Equality and the Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship drew an enthusiastic, flag waving crowd to the Damariscotta/Newcastle bridge on July 29.

Participants urged passersby to support marriage equality in Maine by voting yes on the ballot initiative this November which would permit the issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples, while protecting religious freedom. Motorists and pedestrians alike responded with thumbs up and victory signs.

Newcastle resident Susan Meade carried a sign that best encapsulated the prevailing sentiment: “We support ALL families.” Midcoast UU Fellowship members carried signs declaring they are “standing on the side of love.”

The Lincoln County Coalition for Marriage Equality and Midcoast UU Fellowship will organize further vigils at noon on the Damariscotta/Newcastle bridge on Sunday, Aug. 26, as well as on the last Sundays of September and October.

All supporters of marriage equality are cordially invited to participate.
