BRHS excels at last Wiscasset meet of the season

Boothbay Region High School track athletes squared off against competitors from Mountain Valley, Dirigo and Wiscasset in the last small meet of the season at Wiscasset on May 12. Both girls and boys teams were able to rack up points in most of the events and top the field.

The Lady Seahawks led the scoring with 84 points, closely followed by Dirigo, 81, Mountain Valley 71, and Wiscasset 20. The BRHS boys led with 118 points, followed by Dirigo, 64, Mountain Valley 55 and Wiscasset, 26.

Abel Bryer led the boys in scoring with 15 points, followed by Dima Gosselin and Kyle Ames with 13 each, Matt Burnham (12), Antonio Maulolo (11), and Eli Gudroe, Kyler Carty, Trystan Mercier and Jacob Leonard each earned 10 points. For the girls, Morgan Crocker led the scoring with 22 points, followed by Hannah Morley (15), Angie Perkins (12), and Taylor Walby, Samantha Carter, Lisa Pawlowski and Erika Eames each scored 7 points.

“Matt Burnham had the best single day of competition that I have ever seen from him. He broke 5 minutes in the 1600m for the first time, ran a PR in the 800m and then ran down the no. 1 team in the last leg of the 4x400m for the team victory. His 400m split was a blazing 54.2, another PR for Matt. He is hitting his stride just as the championship season approaches,” Coach Nick Scott said.

“Morgan Crocker once again had a very big night, but was actually caught by the Dirigo 300m hurdler (Sabrina Doud, less than a second apart). They ran in different heats last week (at Wiscasset) so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds at Lisbon on Tuesday when they run in the same heat along with Chase Collier of Lisbon,” Scott said.

This week, the competition gets more fierce. On May 19, BRHS travels to Lisbon to face its top-ranked team, as well as Oak Hill, St. Dom’s, Mountain Valley and Dirigo. Then on Friday, it’s on to CONY for the Capital Area Class A, B and C meet.

“This is a really big week for us in regards to competition. We get to finally see Lisbon (no. 1 in the MVC), two times no less. And there are some really fantastic individual match ups, both in the Lisbon meet and on Friday when we travel to Cony High School for a big invitational that will feature schools from classes A, B & C,” Scott said.

Some of the key event match-ups this week for BRHS include: Kyle Alamo (ranked no. 2 in MVC) faces Jeff Wiley (no. 1) of Lisbon in the 1600m racewalk; Morgan Crocker faces Sabrina Doud (Dirigo) and Chase Collier (Lisbon) in the 300m hurdles, and Collier in both 100m hurdles and long jump and Antonio Maulolo will be up against Lisbon’s Andrew Golino in the shot put. Scott said all the boys relay races should be very fast and contentious, as the top three teams (including BRHS) go head to head.

“The girls hurdle events should be crazy good. For the 300m low hurdles, it’s Morgan vs. Sabrina Doud, vs. Chase Collier — all within 2 seconds of each other and ranked 1,2,3 in the MVC,” Scott said. “Hannah (Morley) should be pushed in both the 1600m (by St. Doms girl) and the 800m by Lisbon girl.”
