The Boothbay Region High School Seahawks football team made a big splash in the home opener September 13 as they turned the annual homecoming game into a rout by scoring early and often in a 32-0 victory over the Telstar Rebels, who looked like they would rather have been anywhere else than in rainy Boothbay Harbor.

For the second straight week, the Seahawks scored on their third play from scrimmage when Jude Alamo scampered in from nine yards out. Julian Aponte gave Boothbay great field position, returning the opening kickoff to the Telstar 41-yard line. Alamo picked up 15 yards on first down and Jason Maddocks bulled for another 17 yards before Alamo's touchdown with just 1:16 gone off the clock.

After a punt by Telstar, the Seahawks again scored quickly as Maddocks cruised into the end zone from 23 yards out for a 14-0 lead after quarterback Nick Kilgus rushed for the two-point conversion with still 7:36 left in the first quarter.

Aponte returned a punt 33 yards for a touchdown three minutes later and would add his second touchdown midway through the second quarter on a 27-yard jaunt. Kilgus would get his own number called as he broke loose up the middle on a keeper that resulted in an81-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

With a 2-0 start in the books, the Seahawks head to Lisbon on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) to take on the 1-1 Greyhounds, who lost to Winthrop before beating Sacopee Valley.

Very pleased with his team's progress, coach Bryan Dionne knows the schedule is going to get tougher.

“Lisbon and Winthrop are the two top teams in the league. We have to continue to get better,” said Dionne.

The Seahawk defense held Telstar to negative yards for most of the night.

“We have instituted very sound defensive principles,” said Dionne. “We diagnose and execute very well. We have really gotten some outstanding play on defense; Howie Carter, Josiah Purin, Gabe Purin, as well as Jeremiah Lucas have really contributed. Tony Hammond and Antonio Maulolo have also been the leaders. They need to be for our defense to be effective.”

Lisbon is led by Quincy Thompson who rushed for over 1,000 yards as a junior.

“They are very fast and well coached,” said Dionne.
