Boothbay students raise over $700 for ALS

At 2 p.m. on a chilly Sept. 29, Boothbay Region High School students and staff met the challenge given them by Wiscasset High School with gusto.

On Sept. 17, WHS did the Ice Bucket Challenge and raised over $250 for ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease). They challenged BRHS to raise at least $200 and also perform the challenge.

BRHS students raised over $700, according to student body president Karl Alamo. Boothbay Region has now challenged Lincoln Academy.

“Students and teachers brought in donations,” BRHS principal Dan Welch said. “One student donated his last paycheck from the summer, $140. Some donations are still trickling in.”

Participating in the challenge was totally voluntary. Welch, along with student volunteers, filled buckets with ice and a hose, which were then carried over to the snack snack. “Victims” gathered underneath the front of the shack.

At 2 p.m., with a quick countdown from Student Body President Karl Alamo, ice and freezing cold water splashed down on the students who quickly scattered, soaking wet. Several teachers and administrators also participated, including Welch.

“Never ask someone to do something you wouldn't do yourself,” Welch said, sopping wet.
