The Boothbay Region Special Olympics ski team competed at the annual Winter Games at Sugarloaf USA Jan. 28-30. Competition included speed skating, snowshoeing, Nordic and alpine skiing.

Boothbay returned with seven gold, four silver, four bronze, 11 fourth-place, 15 fifth-place, seven sixth-place and one seventh-place. Three-quarters of Boothbay’s athletes competed in the level 4 division, including current students and former students. Two of the students were beginners.

Amber Hyson won a Most Improved skier award.

Coach Toby Leconte said, “The weather on Sunday and Monday was beautiful with good conditions for competition. On Tuesday, the temperatures dropped about 10 degrees so the time trials and seeding didn’t matter. At levels 3 and 4, what mattered was how well the athletes used their skis on ice. Boothbay’s athletes were outstanding.”
