Boothbay soccer scores first win against Winthrop

The Boothbay Region High School varsity girls soccer team had plenty of motivation entering its game against Winthrop on Sept. 24. The Seahawks were anxious to break into the win column and played a team they’ve had success against in the past. The Seahawks seemed to be brimming with confidence as they took the field in Winthrop and defeated the Ramblers 5-1 to notch their first win of the season.

But it seemed the soccer team received some added motivation from the cross country runners during the 83-mile and two-plus hour trip. The cross country team kept reminding the soccer players about their success to start the season.

“We wanted to play our ‘A-game’ because we knew this was a team we could beat,” Forward Sinead Miller said. “But on the way there, the cross country team didn’t fail to mention their long winning streak. So we didn’t want to hear about it on the way home if we lost.”

It seemed the “friendly” encouragement from the cross country team provided sufficient motivation as the Seahawks’ offense exploded scoring five goals on 30-plus shots. Miller scored twice in the first half. Midfielder Lindsey Buckingham added another first half goal. Seahawk midfielders Summer Chamberlin and Angie Perkins each scored second half goals.

Boothbay Region coach Kim Dionne said it seemed like everybody got off the bus wanting to score a goal.

“The whole team played with confidence,” she said. “This was a team we knew we could beat. And we went out and dominated them. It was a great performance.”

Later in the week, Boothbay Region lost to Carrabec in North Anson, 5-1, on Sept. 26 and to Hall-Dale at Clifford Field, 5-0, on Sept. 30. The Seahawks are 1-8 and in 17th place in the Western Maine Class C standings.

The Seahawks’ next game is on Oct. 2 as they travel to Madison. Boothbay Region’s next home game is on Oct. 6 versus Mountain Valley of Rumford.
