Boothbay Region Lions Club Column: Cookies needed, Santa's arrival and more

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 9:30am

The furnace is done! Although it was a bit chilly in the clubhouse initially, the new furnace kicked in to warm things up quickly. The 30 members who attended last Wednesday’s meeting helped as well. Once again the kitchen crew did an outstanding job with ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, chocolate cake and ice cream. You could hear members talking about what a great meal it was all night.

Although one bank has denied us a loan, our King Lion is pursuing a loan through another local bank. It looks good for that one. Many thanks to our King Lion for being so diligent in getting our club the needed funds.

The Food for Thought program has asked our help in putting together cookies for their 12 families for delivery on Dec. 19. Please drop them off at the clubhouse between Dec. 17 and 18, marked Food For Thought. And please, no nuts in any of the cookies. Call Lion Karen for further info.

Santa is coming! Mark your calendars and tell your friends. Santa is arriving at the club house on Dec. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. This is a free event for the whole community. Lion Susie is heading up this event and is asking for monetary donations to help defray the cost of pizza and drinks. Cookies are also needed! Call Lion Susie if you have questions or can help out.

Lion Celeste reports the new clubhouse sign is in the works and has made the “suggestion” to her spouse that it be done before skiing! We can look for it to be put up in the spring after the peaks are painted.

A Year Round Growth Patch for 2013-2014 has been given to the club from Lions International. Last year saw an increase in membership of nine. Job well done, Lions! Let’s keep the growth coming — let’s strengthen the pride by increasing our numbers.

Lion Norm reported the blood drive was a success. King Lion read a thank you from the Red Cross for our participation. Thank you Lions, Norm, Pete, Lynn, John, Joyce, Ken, Cappy and Mark for another job well done.

We will be having an informal meeting Nov. 26. Burgers and hot dogs — a night before Thanksgiving tradition for the BR Lions will continue.

Guest speaker for the night was Scott Lash representing Boothbay Region Ambulance Service. Scott gave an informative talk on the new community vehicle “fly car” that was purchased through funds from the Dory Taylor Foundation. Scott explained some of the many changes in paramedicine, some due to the closing of the emergency department at St. Andrews. Many thanks to Scott for spending the evening with us!

Fines were levied to Lions Susie and Karen for “double duty” projects, to Lion Glenn for a parking issue, Lion Neal M. who is headed for someplace warmer and Lion Bruce who hadn’t been seen in a while. Lion Tom fined Lion April for choosing Dr. Alamo over him.

The 50/50 raffle went to Lion Harry who donated it to the pots and pans fund. The cheer raffle was won by Lion Alan.

Congratulations to the “other” local service organization on their new building.

Want to join? Ask a member. We meet the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the Lions Clubhouse on Lakeside Drive. We welcome all.
