The Boothbay Region High School girls basketball team was honored March 8 for its good sportsmanship during the 2016-17 season. The team received the Brooke-Haskell Award from the local chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.

The Central Maine basketball officials board has over 100 members in five Maine counties and serves 30 high schools. The board honors one girls and one boys team each season for displaying exceptional sportsmanship. The board selected BRHS as the girls’ and Hall-Dale as the boys’ recipients.

Board 20 Executive Council member Dave Parkhurst of Boothbay presented the Seahawk girls with a plaque named in honor of  two longtime basketball officials, Bud Brooke and Dick Haskell. Besides officiating, Brooke was an educator at Kents Hills and Haskell coached the University of Maine at Augusta men’s basketball team for many years.

Parkhurst read a sentiment from the local board’s executive committee. “We emphasize to students only one team ends the season with a gold ball, but we see our award as something equally important. Our board picked Boothbay as having the best sportsmanship from over 30 schools. This reflects the behavior of the Boothbay players, coaches and the community of fans and parents.  We only pick one a year, and this year, it's Boothbay,” the sentiment read.

The team finished with an 18-2 record this season and reached the Class C South semifinals.
