The Boothbay lacrosse team earned its first victory April 27 defeating Class B North foe Erskine Academy of South China, 11-5, at Sherman Field. Boothbay scored five first half goals before Erskine scored once. Two of midfielder Kate Friant’s four goals occurred in the first four-plus minutes.

Friant staked Boothbay to an early 2-0 lead scoring first at 2:16 and again, two minutes and 13 seconds later. Boothbay’s Jackie McLoon scored a goal at the seven-minute mark giving the Seahawks a 3-0 lead. And Sydney Meader scored consecutive goals 51 seconds apart, increasing Boothbay’s lead to 5-0. Meader finished as the game’s leading scorer with six goals.

Erskine broke the string of five straight Boothbay goals with one of its own at 13:01.

Boothbay’s play against Erskine was a marked improvement  over its opening game April 25 against Morse. The Shipbuilders defeated Boothbay 17-8. “We played much better today,” Friant said. “Our passing and communication really improved quite a bit from the first game.”

Boothbay coach Donna Jordan agreed with Friant’s assessment. Jordan identified midfield play as a problem against Morse, but a productive practice April 26 clarified any communication problems in the midfield area.

“We really worked on midfield play in the day between games. They understand better their responsibilities and that improvement really showed today,” Jordan said.

Deep defender Nicole Clarke believed better communication also improved the defense’s performance. Against Morse, Boothbay players struggled to position themselves when the Shipbuilders mounted an attack inside the defensive zone, but Thursday, those problems seemingly disappeared against Erskine.

“We did better getting back into position today. We reacted quicker and communicated better which helped us,” Clarke said. “Erskine is a really aggressive team and fights for every loose ball. Reacting quicker helped us slow down their attack.”

Jo Shaw also scored a goal for Boothbay. Evy Case tallied two assists, while McLoon and Lincoln Hamblett each had one.

The Seahawks won again on Saturday. Boothbay traveled to Fryeburg Academy and beat the Raiders 9-7. Friant, again, sparked Boothbay to an early lead scoring three times in the contest’s first 62 seconds. Friant's fourth and final goal gave Boothbay a 4-2 halftime lead.

In the second half, three other Seahawks scored. Meader had three goals. Arsenault and McLoon each had one. Friant also had one assist.

Boothbay outshot Fryeburg 19-17. Seahawk goalie Alexis Davison had 12 saves.

Boothbay is 2-1 in Class B North play. Boothbay hosts Lawrence of Fairfield on May 4.
