This year, postseason basketball is happening a little earlier and closer to home. The Boothbay boys basketball team is hosting a one-day junior varsity tournament. Boothbay JV Coach Dan Hallinan announced the 2018 Frozen Court Classic will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Boothbay Region Elementary School.

Hallinan is expecting a field of six teams separated into two pods. The teams will play two games in pool play and the top two will advance to the next round. In the inaugural Frozen Court Classic, Boothbay will be joined by Winthrop, Dirigo and Gardiner high schools. Hallinan is waiting for responses from Madison and Maranacook high schools.

The tournament’s purpose is to raise money for Boothbay’s basketball program. “This idea was brought to my attention by a parent who thought we should do some fundraising for the kids to get them some sporting gear and so far we have some generous sponsors involved,” Hallinan said.

Local sponsors include The First, Bath Savings Bank, Coastal Maine Popcorn, Hannaford and some local lobstermen.

Each game will be 20-minute halves with a running time until the final two minutes. Each player receives a T-shirt and the championship team will also receive championship T-shirts. The first game will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. Hallinan reported Boothbay JVs would play in the first game. The tournament will also include contests and food concessions throughout the day.
