We have lost a good and enthusiastic friend in Sandra Whitehead whose untimely passing hit us last week, Sandra was the impetus behind our multi-faceted bridge (cards) program at BHYC and she will be missed for this and just so many more reasons. Our condolences to Judge Paul and their family.

Sometimes we are lucky enough to have "stringers" on the scene for events we are unable to cover ourselves. Such was the case for last week's monthly social gathering when Alex Herger agreed to send us some comments on the party so graciously held at her home. In her words herewith:

"I think the party last night was a lot of fun; we managed to squeeze the evening in between two days of rain, so even though it was cloudy and cool we had a nice turnout (50?). It was also nice to have the party be in the daylight now that it doesn't get dark till late, so everyone could enjoy the view. Abby Boody provided some catering for the party (quesadillas and chicken sate - YUM), and there was a ton of food contributed.

"It was nice to see many of the 'snowbirds' back in town and hear about what everyone had been doing all winter. Lots of folks had taken boat trips in warmer climates, taken a keel boat course in the BVI, or been at winter places in Florida. Then there were those that had traveled internationally, and lots of ski trips. So it seemed like we all had a good winter, but are now all looking forward to a wonderful Maine summer on the peninsula! Thanks, Alex."

Mark your calendars for our summers lunch and dinner Authors series. the dates are June 20, July 18, August 8 and 22 and September 12. The names and other vital information will be forthcoming shortly.

Watch for Barbara Duncan on the tennis courts this summer and for some new tennis wrinkles including Cardio Tennis and something we have never heard of, Triples tennis! The full staff has now been hired including a third person who will be a freshman at Colby this coming school year.

Activity on the waterfront is at an all-time high for BHYC. Last Saturday the high school sailors won the Greely Regatta in Portland and then on Sunday they hosted the first of the PenBay series in our own waters. We won one division and finished third in another. It was great to see 12 boats in the water and racing.

The Junior program floats are all in and functioning and they were needed as during school vacation week. Program sailing director Chris Liberti and Olympian Louisa Chaffee conducted a spring sailing clinic. Charles tells me that there were at least eight sailors participating.

The pond house has been receiving a much needed upgrade with new appliances installed and tested and new windows being installed this week. In the clubhouse, the water is now on and all modes are in full operation function. The new dining room carpet will probably be all installed by the time this article appears in print and things will be ready for the kickoff event, the Kentucky Derby party.

The ladies lunch and Mah Jongg gang have celebrated their last lunch at Le Garage and now move for one week to PC Hakansons' (May 3) home and then to BHYC.
