We are in the mop up stage over at the building construction site. Things like final sanding of the drywall joints and of course final painting and trim work are foremost on the schedule inside. Outside we are seeing work on the retaining walls on the waterside of the building and next week the dig into Route 27 for connection to the water main is scheduled for the 29th.

Offsite the cupola is now under fabrication and we will soon see it installed. One of the contractors recently posted pictures of the waterfront taken from the BHODA room on his facebook page and it is indeed a fabulous view!

Last weekend saw the workdays unfold with many important projects tackled with pride and aplomb. The OPti’s were moved from their winter home at the Pond House to their summer , location on the Jr program docks. All of the flower beds and the grounds not encumbered by contractors were raked and beautified and the whalers and J-22’s in the parking lot were uncovered and readied for launching. Yet another team attacked the building and grounds at the Pond House including changing batteries in smoke alarms etc.  The moving crew included Carl Morin, Charlie Cochrane, Commodore Wheeler, Russ Hoffman, Jon Dunsford, and Hamilton Barclay among others. The ladies team included Ella Long, Anne Hughes, Sandy Wheeler, and Sue Hartgrove plus others. We apologize to those whose names are missing as our spies did not take formal attendance.

The tennis courts also received attention with installation of nets, windscreens, awning, and sineage in preparation for the arrival of the  professional maintenance team which will ready the courts for play during the first week in June. Please wait for the “all set” announcement to begin play.

Down at the waterfront boats are starting to appear at assigned moorings and there have been sighted some of the normal osprey residents of the area as well as duck families trying to take over. Soon, for sure,  Jim Stormont, Paul Pinkham, and Ron Maclaren will be skippering the launch which starts its daily service on commissioning day,  Sunday, May 27. A new face will appear from time to time on weekends as Mike McBride joins the team as a substitute. Mike has been a launch operator at Linekin Bay for several past seasons.

The sailing team spent last weekend at Sail Maine where they came home with a victory over five other teams at the Southern Maine Open. Hamilton Barclay and Elle Beauregard  each skippered boats to victory in the A & B division  respectively and defeated second place Cape Elizabeth by 11 points.  On May 26 the team will travel to MDI for the final event of the season the Great Harbor Regatta.

There were about 18  members and friends at the Stakes segment of the Steaks and Stakes event last Saturday but the race was hard to see through the fog and mist. The steaks portion was cancelled due to some plumbing problems in the kitchen which have now been repaired and we are ready for seasonal activity. Such things as the regular Thursday cocktail party will go on as scheduled as well as the Commissioning on Sunday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m. A Plant Day has been scheduled for May 23 and a meet and greet for prospective new members on Thursday, May 24 - check with Sandy Wheeler  for details.

We hear that MahJongg has started on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. This is a result of the ladies lunch starting their weekly gathering by brown bagging it for now until the dining room opens. Peggy Chapman tells me that the number is now four but growing fast each week. All are welcome for sure.

There is a board meeting for Saturday, May 26  starting at 8:30 a.m. and this meeting is listed as board and committee chairs. All members are welcome to be spectators at all board meetings but there may well be “executive sessions” for parts of some meetings where confidential matters or problems can be discussed. Thanks to all of those who serve on the board. It is a year-round commitment and requires thoughtful reactions and decisions re: the operation of the club.
