Two exciting games were played at Thomas College in Waterville to determine the girls and boys basketball championships of the Mountain Valley Conference on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The Boothbay Region varsity girls team edged Mountain Valley, 32-27, and the Dirigo boys nipped the Boothbay Region varsity boys, 68-66, to win the league titles.

Freshman Faith Blethen with 15 points and sophomore Page Brown with nine points led the Lady Seahawks to victory. It was announced at the event that Brown was named the MVC Player of the Year, and both she and Blethen were named to the MVC first-team all star team. Receiving honorable mention as all stars were senior Hannah Morley and junior Kate Friant.

"The game was a great warm-up for the tourney," said Coach Tanner Grover in an email. "It was certainly nice to win, but the team's focus is definitely on Augusta. No matter the outcome of that game, we were excited to have an opportunity to play against a quality opponent on a college length floor."

Boothbay had defeated Mountain Valley during the regular season, 37-33. Boothbay will go into the tournament as the second seed in Class C South while Mountain Valley is the top seed in Class B South.

Dirigo 68 Boothbay 66

"The boys played their best game of the season," said Coach I.J. Pinkham in an email. "They stuck to the game plan, played very hard, shared the ball and cut down on the unforced turnovers."

Senior Abel Bryer, who was named a first-team MVC all star, was a bear on the boards and led both teams in rebounding (12) and scoring (22).

Dirigo senior Riley Robinson, who was named MVC Player of the Year and was a first-team all star, had 21 points. Senior and first-team all star Clay Swett had 18 points, and Cooper Chaisson had 14 points.

BRHS junior Jacob Leonard was named a second-team MVC all star, while receiving honorable mentions as all stars were senior Nick Gorey and sophomore Kyle Ames.

Dirigo is the top seed in Class C South while Boothbay will enter the playoffs as the #6 seed and will host a preliminary tournament game on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. vs. Hall-Dale.

The league all stars are voted on by the league's coaches.
