Boothbay falls to Spruce Mountain, 5-1

The Boothbay Region High School soccer team was unable to extend its winning streak, falling to Spruce Mountain, 5-1, on Monday, Sept 19 at home.
Boothbay came on strong at the opening but faltered under pressure. Spruce Mountain scored three quick unanswered goals in the middle of the first half and then ended the half with another to make it 4-0. The Boothbay girls settled in the second half. Summer Chamberlin scored on a cross from Reagan Cola early but the Seahawks were not able to get another ball into the net. Spruce Mountain scored one more time to make the final score 5-1.
“Spruce Mountain took advantage of some early defensive mistakes en route to a 5-1 win over the Seahawks. However, the score was not really indicative of how closely matched the two teams were. Boothbay came out strong and dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, creating some good opportunities and keeping the ball in their offensive third,” said Coach Ben Powell in an email.
“Unfortunately, the game took a turn for the worse when there were a few Spruce Mountain players left unmarked and some defensive miscommunication that led to three very quick, and preventable goals in the middle of the first half. Spruce Mountain went into half time up 4-0. In my opinion, we took a little bit of a step back in the first half, as we had done a much better job in the previous three games of staying disciplined on defense. However, we put the first half behind us and made a goal of winning the second half.
“We came out strong in the second half with a quick goal on a cross from Reagan Cola and a nice finish by Summer Chamberlin. The two almost hooked up again on the exact same play, but it was a bit tougher ball to finish and it just went wide. I was proud of how the team turned it around in the second half and played them to a 1-1 tie.”
The Seahawks face Winthrop on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Winthrop.
