Boothbay athletes compete at Special Olympic soccer

The Boothbay Region Special Olympic team traveled to Husson University in Bangor October 4 for the Central Maine Soccer Tourney and Skills competition.

In the 11 year old and under category, Royce Rogers took the gold and Anthony Angelico took the silver. Boothbay athletes were ecstatic.

In the 12-15 year old category, Blake Chadwick took home fourth place, John Rankin took the silver and Vincent Giles took the gold. You can imagine the thrill for the team.

The student team of Matthew Hyson, Grace Giles, Deshawn “the beast” Averill, Chloe Desjardins, Logan Posey, Thomas Wilcox, Kasey Graves, Amber Hyson, Valerie Giles and Adam Jackimovicz took to the field for the tournament.

In the first game, Boothbay lost to Oceanside, 3-1. Boothbay was unable to get around their defense or get their sweeper in a good position. Adam Jackimovicz scored for Boothbay.

In game two, with a new sweeper and a plan to get through the defense, Boothbay won, 3-1. Adam scored all the goals and was assisted by Deshawn Averill and Matthew Hyson. Valerie quickly studied the sweeper position and the problems Boothbay had had in the first game. She was able to clear all the balls from the goal guarded by Thomas Wilcox.

Amber Hyson and Logan Posey were able to think about the defense and their positions in order to get the ball down into scoring position. Chloe Desjardins and Grace Giles were able to assist as well.

Game three was for medal position. Boothbay won this game as well, 3-1. Adam scored all the goals in this game as well. Boothbay was thrilled as this put the team into the gold medal position. When they took the stand, the crowd went crazy with applause.

The adult team consisted of goalie Danny Miller, Ronda LeConte, Joey Ranco and Brenda LeConte in the front line, with Matt Farnham and Donny Dunning playing sweepers. The team played Basso Bears and lost in a sudden death, 2-1. Brenda scored for Boothbay. In game 2 they played the Navigators 2 Team and lost 4-1. Joey scored Boothbay's goal. Boothbay finished in sixth place.

It was a beautiful day and lots of great sportsmanship was exhibited.
