Blue Moon Cafe still going strong

Fred Munro bought the Blue Moon Cafe from Wendy and Paul Johnson (who now run nearby Red Cup Coffeehouse) in 2006.

Before running Blue Moon Cafe, Munro was at McSeagull's in a managerial position for around 10 years.

Now in its 10th season under Munro's proprietorship, the Blue Moon is still serving many of the same items that were on the menu before he purchased the business.

Munro bought the whole package.

“I bought the name, the property, the business,” he said. “I wouldn't have done it otherwise. When I bought it from Wendy and Paul, the speculation was what we should do with it. Should we keep it the same?”

He decided to keep the same menu, with a few changes.

“There are so many great things on (the menu), we decided to pretty much leave it the way it was.”

The cafe is on the water, with an outside deck over the harbor, across from and a little way beyond Waves Restaurant (formerly Ebb Tide). It is down a short walkway and not readily seen by people walking that way.

“It's amazing how many people have been coming to the harbor for years, who come in and say 'Oh, we didn't know you were here,’” Munro said. “But then they'll keep coming back.”

The menu is extensive, with a lot of options for breakfasts and sandwiches.

“For breakfast we have a cinnamon and pecan encrusted French toast, a smoked salmon bagel or omelet, both made with cream cheese and capers, and our blueberry pancakes are very popular,” Munro said.

Munro admits that parking can be a problem in that part of town, but said people can park nearby. “There is parking across from the police station. You can hit a baseball that far.”

The lunch menu includes homemade chowders and soups, and a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches. One of the more popular sandwiches is the chicken satay.

“We make our own peanut sauce for that,” Munro said. “It is sliced chicken with the peanut sauce, wrapped up with carrots, slaw, sprouts and onion, then we brown it on a flat-top (grill).”

Another house favorite is the haddock wrap, one of Munro’s creations.

“The haddock is dipped in egg wash and bread crumbs and pan fried to golden brown. The we put it in a wrap with lettuce, tomato and onion, and our homemade salsa, then crisp it up on the flat-top. And it is served with chips, pickle and cole slaw. People love it.”

Other sandwiches include a classic Reuben, a Tuscan veggie, a crab melt, a roast beef and Boursin on a French roll, a grilled Portobello mushroom sandwich, a lobster roll and a variety of burgers.

All salad dressings, soups and sauces are house made.

Munro said he tried doing cocktail parties and dinners for a while, but they didn't work out.

“Now we just do breakfast and lunch, and we try to do the best job we can with those.”

Beer, wine and cocktails are available.

“Fred's Most Excellent Bloody is a favorite here,” Munro said. “I've been accused of the best bloody Mary in town.”

Aside from its extensive menu, the Blue Moon offers an unusual service: they deliver free-of-charge. “We'll deliver, on foot or using my scooter, to people and businesses in the immediate vicinity (around the town center) and we have what we call “curb side.” Some people will call and order from a little further away, I'll tell them how much it will be, then they'll call me when they arrive at the “loading zone,” and we'll run it up to their car, so they don't have to worry about parking.”

The small restaurant is bright and airy, with deck seating over the harbor.

Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (or later if there's a line at the door) daily. Call 207-633-2220 to order, or better yet, enjoy breakfast or lunch in the sunny interior of on the deck with an ocean breeze.
