Wiscasset just keeps getting better!

Beelicious, “A sweet little market,” opened its doors recently at 64 Main Street.

Monica Carrington owns the market selling honey, jams, coffee, and local and imported specialty foods from Europe.

Carrington came from Chicago before moving to Florida for a couple years, where she met her husband, a chef, who had a restaurant with his father in Palm Coast.

They moved north in 2008, thinking they'd start a restaurant, but that never happened. Eventually they found the space on Main Street and decided to open something “food-related.”

Carrington said she's working with Chicago Importing Co. for the European food items in the market, and she’s getting new items in every week.

At least a part of her goal was to provide some items that aren't usually found around coastal Maine. “I grew up in Chicago and there were a lot of European and Polish delis around, and a lot of these items were a staple in our kitchen. When I came here I thought it would be interesting to have some local foods alongside European ones.”

There are lingonberries from Sweden. There's honey from Florida, Colorado, Washington, and of course Maine — raspberry and blueberry flavors. “I started researching honey and hadn't realized there were so many different varieties and colors and flavors,” she said.

There are a wide variety of syrups, jams and beverages, many sweetened with honey, and popcorn with organic honey and butter.

There's a large freezer stocked with hand-made pierogies from a Polish deli in Portland, Millie's Pierogi from Massachusetts, Swedish meatballs, gluten-free items and cookie dough from the Maine Pie Company, and Terra Cotta Pasta Co. raviolis and sauces.

Hot Seacoast coffee is available, and apple cider donuts from Galley Goodies in Bath have been flying off the shelf. “They're amazing,” Carrington said. “People have been asking when we'll have the donuts in.”

And if you're not in the mood for a donut there's a cooler full of Trudie's Treats — raspberry and blueberry streusel bars and whoopie pies.

If you're not hungry, there are gift items like nicely scented organic candles and room sprays and greeting cards featuring flower watercolors.

Carrington said her husband will be helping out in the shop. “We're doing strictly food retail right now, because he's the chef and he's busy with a carpentry business right now.” She said they're planning to expand and grow once he comes on board full time. They'll have sandwiches and soups to go. “We're both Polish-American so we're thinking about making cabbage rolls with tomato sauce and a few other specialty items.”

Eventually Carrington will carry more Polish jarred goods, like horseradish with beets, and sauerkraut.

Carrington is hoping that cakes are in Beelicious's future, too. She's working at building a business relationship with a company in Massachusetts that specializes in cakes. “That was really the reason we started this place, but we have to travel for goods like that.”
