Be careful

    Dear Editor:

When developers like Paul Coulombe are selling their ideas, they talk about increased business, revitalized economy, great opportunities (“It’ll be great!.” Sound familiar?).

They don't mention the consequences of increased demand for scarce resources: water, bandwidth (and more cell towers), electricity, security, parking, high end chain retail stores that push out local merchants (take a look at Freeport for evidence), increased traffic, etc.

As a Mainer born and bred and like Mr. Coulombe, a UMO grad, I value the Maine difference. After living 20-plus years in California, I know what it's like to deal with competition for resources, climate change impact, and high population.

I'm moving back to Maine. But I'm not coming back so I can live in a tarted up, California version of a Maine town. Be careful what you wish for -- and do look a gift horse in the mouth.
