Author Terry Webb showcased her “Louie” book series at Sherman’s Books and Stationery in Boothbay Harbor on Friday, June 23. There are four books in the series, all set on the fictional “Two Tree Island in Windless Bay” just after the turn of the 20th century.

Each book is set in a season of the year. The first book, “Manning the Light,” is set in summer; the second, “Weathering the Storms,” in fall; the third, “Mystery and Mishap,” in winter; and the fourth, “Leaving the Lighthouse,” in spring.

“The island is fictional, but the series deals with all the realities of lighthouse tending and manning, not to mention that it captures all the gadgets of the time — Marconi’s telegraph, the Wright brothers and the first flight, the coal gondola, phonograph, the first motion picture, the first Boston Red Sox World Series and the first automobile,” Webb said.

Webb, who was raised between Pig Cove and Burnt island, did all of her research for the series in the Boothbay Harbor Historical Society and with the help of the Burnt Island Lighthouse curator at the time.

“My father was the summertime minister at All Saints by-the-Sea and I grew up listening to the foghorn,” said Webb. “It got me interested in island life and lighthouses. I’m excited, now, because the Maine Maritime Museum has an exhibit on Maine’s lighthouses in all the seasons.”

By late afternoon, Webb had sold out of the first book in her series and was just about fresh out of her second book.

“I had fun writing them and I hope people will enjoy reading them.”
