Studio Theatre of Bath (STB) will hold auditions for its fall production of “Ubu Roi” on Sunday, Aug. 2 from 1-5 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 3 from 6-9 p.m. at the Patten Free Library in Bath.

Actors: Bring Your Imagination! Be prepared to be silly! Before there was Monty Python there was King Ubu. Multiple roles are available for men and women ages 17 and up. Performance dates are Oct. 22-25 at Winter Street Center in Bath. The director will be Howard Waxman.

Studio Theatre's production aims to capture the spirit of Ubu in a performance style we call "Modern Commedia Dell'arte," a tribute to The Marx Brothers, Lucille Ball, Ernie Kovaks, Soupy Sales, and the other celestial zanies that have lighted our lives over the years. The play provides non-stop action that should leave audience breathless - and the cast five pounds lighter after each performance.

When it opened (and closed) on Dec. 10, 1896, Alfred Jarry's “Ubu Roi” was so clearly different from any play that had come before that it caused a riot in the Parisian audience between those who recognized it for the liberating force it was, and those who resented it for just the same reason.

Jarry (1873-1907) is considered one of the founders of the modern avant-garde. In addition to being a playwright and poet, Jarry was one of the first performance artists turning his personal life into an ongoing work of art. He was also a philosopher, creating the theory of Pataphysics, which studies the laws which govern exceptions. In Pataphysics, every event in the universe is accepted as an extraordinary event.

STB is also looking for a stage manager/assistant director. Prefer young and strong person, but old and strong is great, too. Must be good prompter. Experience a plus but enthusiasm is most desirable.

Call Waxman for details about auditions at 207-504-7020.

The Patten Free Library is located at 33 Summer Street.
