Arthur adds to region’s rain

A snapped tree blocked northbound Route 218 in Alna, just south of Head Tide Road, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur continued to pull away from Lincoln County and the rest of Maine’s coast early July 5.

The thin tree fell on wires but did not snap them. Alna firefighters were putting up cones and barricades shortly before 6 a.m.; the southbound lane of Route 218 would be open for both southbound and northbound traffic until Central Maine Power could get to the scene, fire officials said.

Numerous trees were partly blocking, but not closing, any Lincoln County roads, a Lincoln County Communications dispatcher said. East Pond Road in Nobleboro was down to one lane due to flooding, according to a Maine Department of Transportation announcement.

Just before 7 a.m. Saturday, CMP’s website at www.cmpco.com was reporting 299 customers without power in Lincoln County. Jefferson led with 210 out, followed by Whitefield with 43. Boothbay, Southport and Newcastle each had one customer out of power. Eleven were out in Alna, and two in Edgecomb.

A slow-moving cold front in recent days and Arthur combined to give Lincoln County two to three inches of rain, said meteorologist James Brown of the National Weather Service’s Gray office. Brown expected the rain to end by about mid-morning Saturday. With winds of 10 mph to 15 mph to stick around through the nighttime hours.
