American Legion Post 36

Thu, 02/04/2016 - 9:45am

Our February meeting is Monday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. The latest figures I have show the Post at 91 percent membership. If you have not renewed, why not take care of business at our next meeting. Speaking of membership, it took me just shy of 50 years to join. One day, something hit me. “How about giving back in honor of our guys who didn’t come back?” Don’t wait as long as I did. Post 36 has a history that is incredible. Help us keep it rolling!

Thanks to all who contribute to our bottle/can deposit cages. Money is used toward helping serve our local veterans in many ways.

Veterans helping veterans is, of course, a major aspect of the Legion. In this respect, a group of area veterans have started meeting. The group meets Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Freedom Fellowship Church in Wiscasset, which is located opposite Norm’s Used Cars. A complete story can be found on the front page of the January 14 Register. For more information, call Frank Hansen, senior minister, Air Force veteran, at 841-2867.

Post 36 sends its sympathy and condolences to the family of George Cochrane, Navy veteran and longtime Legion member. George was a U.S. Navy flight engineer in World War II and Korea.

Knox Museum in Thomaston is honored to have been selected to exhibit the Vietnam Veterans’ The Moving Wall Memorial for five days over the Memorial Day weekend. Many volunteers will be needed in many ways. For more information, visit Facebook/The Moving Wall to Maine 2016. Meeting dates and contact people are listed there. This column will keep you informed.

The first Sunday in February is Four Chaplains Sunday. It marks the anniversary of the sinking of the USAT Dorchester by a U-boat in the North Atlantic on Feb. 3, 1943. Among the 672 men who died were four Army chaplains who gave their life jackets to others. Legion Post 202, 79 Foreside Road, Topsham will host a ceremony at 1 p.m. on Feb. 6. Learn lots more at www.fourchaplains.org.
