American Legion Post 36

Thu, 10/30/2014 - 10:00am

Thanks to all who came in for breakfast this past Sunday. We appreciate it and extra kudos to you loyal "regulars." Thank you Sandra for provided the sweets, as you have done for so long. Our next breakfast is Sunday, Nov. 9. Ham is the featured item. Hours are 7-9:30 a.m. Call 207-633-0617 for more information.

Our next meeting is Monday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. Had some new faces at our last and sincerely hope we'll see yours at our next. Your input and/or "yay/nay" is important in matters proposed. Come also and meet some new members.

Kudos to Post 36 Adjutant, Past Commander, Air Force veteran Bob Raudenbush, who was welcomed in Seaside Lodge 144 in Boothbay Harbor as its newest Master Mason.

Congratulations to the BRHS boys for winning the 2014 Class C Western Region Cross Country title. A member of the team is David Machon. I single him out only because he puts in many hours helping out at our breakfasts, along with others in his family.

On the 11th month of the 11th day, and the 11th hour, in 1918, all the guns of the Western Front went silent. World War I had ended.

Veterans Day, known as Armistice Day, was first observed on Nov. 11, 1921 at Arlington National Cemetery and was marked by the burial of the Unknown Soldier.

The World War, as it was called, was supposed to be the "war that ended all wars."

During the Eisenhower administration, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, to honor all our veterans — those living and those departed.

Veterans Day is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate. More than a day of somber ceremony, it should be equally observed with gratitude and joy for all the good things that we enjoy as citizens of the greatest country on earth.

The time for celebration and pageantry is once again at hand with the 239th Marine Corps birthday set to take place Nov. 10. The U.S. Marine Corps has earned the world's respect as an elite and reliable fighting unit wherever put into combat: "Semper Fidelis."

The Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club invites all local veterans to its Veterans Recognition Dinner on Thursday evening, Nov. 6, 6 p.m. at the Post hall. RSVP to 207-633-8330 by Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Tree of Hope Ceremony will be held Nov. 9 at Topsham Post 202, at 1 p.m. This is for the POW/MIA from the Vietnam Conflict still missing from the state of Maine.

American Soldiers and Marines have conducted road marches for more than 240 years. Road marches have brought American soldiers to Lexington, Gettysburg and Bastogne. Today our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen continue to fight in Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world, often marching into battle. The 15th annual Veterans Day Road March is being conducted in coordination with the Summit Project, the American Legion, the V.F.W and Togus VA.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, beginning at 6 a.m. with a pre-brief at 5:45 a.m., soldiers, veterans and supporters will conduct a 7.5 mile road march, beginning at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located at Capital Park, in Augusta. Designated Soldiers and Veterans will carry Summit Project stones, each representing a Maine Fallen Hero in the global war on terror.

The road march will proceed north on State Street, south onto Route 9 and east on Route 17 to Togus, VA. Upon arrival at Togus, marchers will participate in a wreath laying ceremony and a dedication of the Summit Project mobile display case, built by Maine Veterans.

All veterans and supporters are invited to march in this event. Participants are encouraged to march any portion of the route, ride along or to join us at the memorial service at 8:30 a.m. Marchers may wear all authorized military uniforms or civilian clothing. Lead and trail vehicles will provide opportunity for respite. Refreshments will be provided during the march. I encourage all participants to visit the Summit Project website, you will be moved: mainememorial.org.

Please join us in honoring our nations veterans. For more information, please contact Sheriff Randall Liberty at raliberty@liberty.edu or 207-623-3591 ext. 240 or 207-649-0132.

As citizens it is our duty and constitutional responsibility to exercise our right to vote and encouraging others as well. The American Legion's "Get Out the Vote" program was initiated in 1920. Today it is as important as it was in elections past.
