American Legion Post 36

Fri, 07/25/2014 - 11:30am

The Post is sincerely thankful for the 62 patrons who were in attendance at our July 6 breakfast, and the 57 who dined at our July 14 breakfast. We are very appreciative. We'll be serving hamburger on Sunday, Aug. 3. Check Goings On in the Register for details.

The Post appreciates it and thanks you for using our can/bottle deposit bin. The location is still at the entrance to Hawke Motors.

The Maine American Legion 2014 State Baseball Tournament is July 30 through August 3 at Husson University in Bangor.

Post 36 sends out its congratulations to Leah Sample, who was awarded Boothbay Harbor's Spirit of America volunteer award. Leah is the mother of Past Commander Linc Sample, Sgt. at Arms at the Post.

The Post is available for rentals, such as parties, weddings, etc. Contact Lew Curtis (207-633-6219) or Harry Pinkham (207-633-2260).

All Americans are called upon to observe National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day on Saturday, July 27. Flags should be flown at half-mast in remembrance of the U.S. personnel who lost their lives during the 37 months of combat in Korea. If you know Korean War vets, thank them.

Conceived as a Saratoga Springs-type resort in the 1850s, Togus was instead transformed into a facility for wounded Civil War vets. Founded in 1866, it is now the oldest VA Medical Center in the country.

The post congratulates Chief Boatswains Mate William Armstrong on becoming the new station chief of the U.S. Coast Guard in Boothbay Harbor. We wish you much success. Much appreciation is extended by the Post to BMC Kris Demetros, station chief for the past 3 years. Thanks for all you were responsible for in relation to helping Post 36. We wish you the best in Sitka, Alaska.

The 2015 membership drive is underway. Thanks for getting "re-upped." If you are comfortable doing it online go to www.members.legion.org. If not, continue renewing as you have done. We currently have 139 members. Sadly we understand why that number is nowhere close to membership at the post 30 years ago. Most importantly, thank you for being the reason why our percent of goal was above 100 percent the past year. As my friend Ed Thibault would say, "Have you asked a veteran to join today?"

The American Legion Post in our local area is honorably named "Charles E. Sherman Jr. Post 36," and was originally located on Atlantic Avenue. It is now located on Industrial Park Road in Boothbay. Our charter was approved August 14, 1919. Charles E. Sherman Jr., a Boothbay Harbor native, was killed in action during the Battle of Belleau Wood, Chateau Thierry, France during World War I. Private Sherman is interred in Ocean View Cemetery, Boothbay.

I'm sure you'll find something for yourself, or as a gift, at www.emblem.legion.org. Be sure to do a product search for youth education. There are some wonderful booklets for youngsters. I plan on putting them in my grandkid's library soon. Also request a free catalog.

The Post is in need of a 12-cubic-foot, frost-free upright freezer. If you have one or know of one that we could purchase for a reasonable price, or would like to donate, please contact Fran Nicoletta at 207-633-0617.
