Alley scores first goal of the season

Boothbay Region fullback Brenna Alley found herself in a strange position on Oct. 10.

Alley had been moved from her regular fullback position to playing on the front line. With the Seahawks trailing by several goals, coach Kim Dionne shuffled her line-up, which resulted in Alley moving to offense and Sinead Miller moving to defense.

Alley played the game’s last 27 minutes on the front line and scored her team’s lone goal in a 9-1 loss.

Alley scored with about five minutes remaining in the game. Miller blasted a direct kick from about 30 yards away. The Madison goalie deflected the shot toward Alley who tapped it into the goal’s opposite corner. Alley was taking a water break in the second half when she was told about her position change.

“I was talking to Coach about our defense when she asked me about playing another position,” Alley said. “So I thought it would be a nice change to play on the front line scoring goals instead of stopping them.”

The team’s alignment change resulted in Alley and Miller changing positions.

Boothbay Region continued to struggle last week in league play. The Seahawks lost for the second time last week to Mountain Valley of Rumford. The Falcons defeated Boothbay Region 6-1 loss on Oct. 6. Mountain Valley (8-3) is ranked No. 4 in the Western Maine Class C girls’ standings.

Boothbay’s only goal against Mountain Valley came from Miller, who returned to her forward position. She received the ball just outside the penalty area and maneuvered around two defenders. She blasted a shot from 12 yards away scoring her fourth goal of the year.

“Once I got past the two defenders I focused on the goalie,” Miller said. “She was in the center so I aimed for the upper left corner.”

The loss left the Seahawks with a 1-10 record. Boothbay Region is in 17th place in the Western Maine C girls’ soccer standings. Miller believes the team’s recent inconstant play should be attributed to a lack of focus.

“Our play depends on what team shows up,” she said. “When we play our ‘A’ game we’re very competitive, but we tend to daze off and do a lot of ball watching instead playing hard at times.”

The Seahawks will play their last home game of the season on Oct. 11 during the school’s Homecoming Weekend. Boothbay Region will host Class B Oak Hill (3-7) in Wales. The game start at 11 a.m. on Sherman Field.
