Alan Doyle is a long way from retiring after the Canadian folk super group Great Big Sea “happily retired.” Doyle, lead singer of that band for more than 20  years, is also an actor, producer, and new best selling author. Musically he continues to perform with  the Beautiful Gypsies — talented fiddler Kendel Carson, Cory Tetford, Paul Kinsman, Shehab Illyas, and (Great Big Sea band mate) Kris MacFarlane. Their tour brings them to the Chocolate Church Arts Center on March 24 for a 7:30 p.m. show.

This current  tour follows up on the success of Doyle’s second solo album, “So Let’s Go,” which included collaborations with songwriter Donovan Woods (Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum).  Doyle will share the signature brand of folk rock that made Great Big Sea one of the most successful Canadian bands of the ’90s and 2000s. As a solo artist, Doyle takes new directions into contemporary rock music that widens his audience while preserving the music of his native Newfoundland, whose sea shanties were a staple of the music produced while a part of Great Big Sea.

Doyle’s recently published memoir, “Where I Belong,” is about growing up in the tiny fishing village of Petty Harbor, Newfoundland, before taking a journey across the world as a musician.

As a performer, Doyle says, “I always want people to have the greatest night of their life when the house lights go down.”

Doyle’s down-to-earth approach to his music and audiences alike endear him to fans both old and new. This tour showcases the best of folk musicianship in its current form and is an opportunity for those who already love this music a chance to hear new offerings that are sure to be a stirring experience in an intimate setting.
