Letter to the Editor

An act of treason

    Dear Editor:

The recent letter to the leader of Iran from 47 Republican Senators regarding the current multinational negotiations over Iran's nuclear program and stating that any agreement is only valid during the Obama Administration is, in my personal opinion, a clear act of treason by these elected people. As a Mainer, I am pleased that our Republican Senator, along with only six other Republicans, did not sign this disgraceful undermining of our country and our President.

This letter, with its 47 Republican signatories, aids a terrorist state and committed enemy of this country. It also tells the world, friend and foe alike, that U.S. international agreements mean nothing. These people have undermined this country in a manner that is without precedent in the history of this country. For this I completely condemn their treasonous action. While individuals like Jane Fonda have engaged in actions that supported our enemy, there is no instance where elected representatives engaged in such actions, contacting a foreign state in a manner that outright undermines the integrity and honor of this country's word.

I am proudly a political independent. There is much that the current Administration does that I do not necessarily agree with, while there is much I do agree with. I do, however, draw the line, as an American, with people who engage in actions that directly undermine this nation. The fact that a vast majority of the Republicans in the Senate (87 percent) including the Senate Majority Leader, engaged in this gratuitous action of complete irresponsibility convinces me that the Republican party is unfit to govern. I hope that honorable people such as Senator Collins carefully consider their continued membership in this disreputable party. The GOP once stood for honorable and dignified conduct. This is no longer true in my opinion. They have strengthened the position of Iran and are in the process of leading to an eventual war that, barring the use of nuclear weapons, we can not win. In the meantime, this party, with its highest leadership and in control of the Senate, has formally told the world that we can not be trusted. For this I seriously fear for the country I have served and love.
