Five local teenagers survived an early morning accident involving a convertible on Butler Road in Boothbay on Tuesday, Sept. 2, although three were brought to area hospitals, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

According to the father of one of the victims, he said Wednesday morning that his daughter is still a patient at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She suffered severe facial wounds that required surgery and she sustained serious back injuries as well.

Lt. Rand Maker of the sheriff’s department confirmed Wednesday, Sept. 3, that one female victim was taken to Maine Medical Center, while another female and one male were taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

According to the sheriff's report, the Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of the accident at around 1:42 a.m. on Tuesday.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro convertible operated by 19-year-old Benjamin Hutchings of Boothbay Harbor was traveling south on Butler Road. As the vehicle entered a sharp left turn, it left the roadway, struck an embankment and rolled. The vehicle came to rest on its roof in a driveway.

The front passenger of the vehicle, 18-year-old Daniel Dugay of Boothbay, was one of the three occupants transported by ambulance from the scene.

The three female occupants in the back seat are only being identified at this time as a 17-year-old from Boothbay, a 15-year-old from Boothbay, and a 17-year-old from Boothbay Harbor. The 15-year-old from Boothbay and the 17-year-old from Boothbay Harbor were transported by ambulance from the scene.

Both the 17-year-old from Boothbay and Hutchings refused transport. Some of the injuries sustained in this crash are believed to be serious in nature, but specific injury information on those transported from the scene is not being released at this time.

It appears that both Hutchings and Dugay were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Because this investigation is in its early stages, the Sheriff’s Office is still working to confirm who of the three rear seat passengers were wearing a seat-belts at the time of the crash.

As in all crash cases with serious injury or death, a blood specimen was obtained from Hutchings. Deputies will be working over the next several days to determine if alcohol, drugs and/or speed were involved in this crash in anyway.

Deputy Jared Mitkus is the primary investigating officer who was assisted by Sgt. Daniel Sceviour. A reconstruction of the crash is being conducted by Sgt. Jason Nein.

Members of the Boothbay Fire Department, Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Wiscasset Ambulance Service and Wiscasset Fire Departments also responded. Butler Road was closed for traffic for approximately two hours as investigators examined the scene.
