2017 DEYC Day Tripper at Ovens Mouth

Thu, 08/31/2017 - 8:30am

This was the 2017 season ending “Day Trippers” event for the DEYC. These Day Trips have proven to be a popular way for DEYC members to gather, raft up and enjoy lunch with great friends. We plan to continue with Day Tripper outings next year.

Soon after the annual meeting adjourned at Tugboat Inn, several DEYC members, including P/C Tim Parker, and new Commodore Susan Pope, boarded 14 small and large power and sailing vessels for the day trip to Ovens Mouth reserve in the Cross River located east of Cross Point on the Sheepscot River.

The day was blessed with light wind, comfortable sun, good visibility and an accommodating tide. Some boats cruised up the Sheepscot River to the north end of Barters Island and others went inside through the swing bridge at the Trevett Country Store and up the Cross River.

As we approached Ovens Mouth at about 1200 hours, we witnessed a total of 14 boats carrying 30-plus DEYC members and guests making their way to the rafting zone selected by “Day Tripper originator,” Pete Yesmentes. A four-knot current provided less than a minor challenge for the seasoned captains to anchor and raft-up. Boats gathered in several small rafts to enjoy lunch in great weather. The highlight of the day was the camaraderie that is always prominent when “DEYClubbers” get together. P/C Tim Parker visited each raft in his kayak while many were busy taking pictures of the merriment.

Thank you to all who participated in this season’s Day Tripper events. The DEYC Day Tripper Committee welcomes ideas and comments for the 2018 season.
