Vinalhaven Here We Come

When one thinks of living in a Memory Loss Community, the thought of enjoying an afternoon ferry ride to a beautiful Maine island doesn’t usually come to mind. This is exactly how residents who live at Harbor View Cottage spent a glorious summer day Thursday. At 11 am sharp The Lincoln Home bus departed Newcastle full of smiling men and women, and the memory loss that each of them live with was meaningless as they became quintessential Maine tourists for a day. The ride up Route One to the Ferry Terminal in Rockland was a time of chatter, laughing and reminiscences.

Once the bus was waved onto the ferry and secured, a few residents went out on deck to smell the sea air, hear the gulls call and watch the sail boats glide by. Two of the men who had been avid sailors in the past and knew these Maine waters by heart told their favorite sailing stories. A lunch was served to all and then several ferry riders boarded the bus with their children to share conversations and join in the fun. At the end of the day the weary travelers returned home to Harbor View Cottage for supper. Some had already forgotten their tourist adventures while others were still chatting happily about theirs. All of them, however, were still smiling and content for nothing is finer than riding a ferry off the coast of Maine on a late summer day.

Harbor View Cottage at The Lincoln Home, is a small, unique memory loss community in Newcastle, Maine where residents enjoy meaningful and joyful living every day.
