Real estate brokers are expected to be knowledgeable when it comes to buying and selling property. Equally important, however, they are also often called upon for a general understanding of a range of topics relating to financing, home inspection, and home improvements.

Newcastle Realty recently hosted a Lunch and Learn session recently for just this reason; to learn more about renewable energy options for homeowners. Coordinated by Patti Brown, a Newcastle Realty sales agent, and featuring Andrew Kahrl of Portland-based ReVision Energy, the group explored the cost and value to homeowners of a range of renewable energy systems. “I was interested in bringing someone in to explain the basics of renewable energy so that our brokers can better serve clients and there was interest among the other Cheney Financial Group companies and their staff as well,” said Brown.

The cost of installing a solar energy system has decreased by 50% over the past 5 years and is now more affordable than ever. Added to this reduction in cost, residential solar installations are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit. Revision Energy, which operates in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, has installed over 7,000 solar electric systems since their founding in 2003. It was particularly interesting to note that the savings from solar energy equal-net-billing can be passed on to the next person who buys the home after the initial installation.

Dennis Hilton, President and CEO of Cheney Financial Group, the parent firm to Newcastle Realty, is no stranger to ReVision Energy. “We had been watching the renewable energy industry evolve for some time before deciding to install a 136-panel solar array on the flat roof of the Day-Nash Building last year,” commented Hilton. “Working with ReVision Energy was a pleasure, and Cheney Insurance and Newcastle Vacation Rentals are now completely energy independent,” he continued. “Patti saw a need to offer more comprehensive information to her fellow real estate brokers on this important subject, and she did a wonderful job with this Lunch and Learn event.”
