Low Oil Prices Are an Opportunity, says Energy Director

The cost of home heating oil in Maine is unusually low right now, thanks to falling crude oil prices, and Patrick Woodcock, director of the Governor’s Energy Office, sees it as an opportunity.

“Heating oil prices this low are freeing up dollars that Maine households can use to invest in energy efficiency and heating system upgrades,” he said in a press release. “When prices rise again, those investments will pay dividends. Now is the time to plan ahead.”

Brian Robinson, an Energy Advisor with Evergreen Home Performance, agrees. “Savvy homeowners are reinvesting that fuel savings ‘bonus’ in their homes and making improvements that will reduce their fuel use – and expenses – permanently.” As a certified energy auditor, Robinson assesses homes and engineers home comfort and energy-saving improvements like air sealing and insulation. Those comprehensive upgrades can cut home energy use by 25-50%, reducing fuel costs permanently.

“The beauty of improved energy efficiency is that the savings don’t depend on the price of fuel,” says Robinson.
