Kite Week at Owls Head Transportation Museum

Event has passed

Nothing says “summer” like flying a kite, so get ready for the season by bringing your kids to Kite Week at the Owls Head Transportation Museum April 17-21. Taking place during April Spring Vacation, this series of workshops combines puzzle solving, craft making and the joy of kite flying for a fun, family-oriented week. Kite Week has been a Museum favorite for years. Each day features a different type of kite, and workshops throughout the week accommodate a variety of skill levels and ages.

There are two sessions each day Monday through Thursday, one at 10:00 a.m. and one at 1:00 p.m., and one session on Friday at 10 a.m. All children must be accompanied by an adult. These fun, educational workshops are free to the public and materials are provided (suggested donation: $5). Pre-registration is strongly recommended, as seating is limited. General registration opens on Monday, April 3.

Kite Week Schedule:

Monday, April 17: Butterfly Kite The simplest of all of the kites. If you can use scissors, you can make this kite. Construction takes 30 minutes, including decorating.

Tuesday, April 18: Sled Kite This kite is a fairly simple, short project that requires almost no knot tying. The duration of this workshop is 30-45 minutes.

Wednesday, April 19: Diamond Kite Build a traditional diamond shaped kite, just like Charlie Brown’s, only yours will actually fly! This workshop requires the tying of several knots and lots of string to construct the frame of the kite. Workshop duration is approximately 60 minutes.

Thursday, April 20: Delta Kite Almost no knot tying is involved; however, this kite does involve a bit of puzzle solving skill. Construction takes approximately 60 minutes. The Delta Kite is the easiest kite to fly for a first time kite builder.

Friday, April 21: Box Kites This kite provides a great introduction to more complex styles. The Box Kite requires 60–90 minutes to complete and is recommended for older children (ages 8 and up). Due to the length of the program, there will be a 10:00 a.m. class only.

After building their kites, participants are welcome to decorate them with crayons and markers provided by the Museum or bring their own art supplies. The Museum provides ample outdoor space for everyone to test the newly built kites.
