A message on the state budget
By Rep. Bruce MacDonald
State revenues are down due to the huge recession we are experiencing as a state and nation. As a result, since we are not going to raise taxes, and since the state must run a balanced budget, we have to cut another $438 million in this session. Since December 2008, the state has lost over $1 billion in revenue out of a $6 billion budget. Since about 80 percent of all the money that comes into the state is sent back to our towns, schools and to local health care providers, this loss of revenue is bound to have wide-spread negative economic and social impacts.
