CSD school committee continues budget review

At its January 27 meeting, the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District (CSD) School Committee reviewed the 2010-11 proposed health, transportation, and food service budgets. Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) Principal Dan Welch introduced a plan to manage the alternative education program, currently contracted with the Boothbay Region YMCA, in-house and to better utilize teaching staff.

Poe pleads not guilty to charges

Edgecomb residents want support

for bypass option

Several Edgecomb residents asked selectmen Monday night to write a letter supporting the so-called long bridge option for the midcoast bypass. However, John Johnson and Stuart Smith put off any action until their February 15 meeting, when fellow selectman Jack Sarmanian is expected to be able to attend.

Growing Green: Bigelow Laboratory and Bodega Algae collaborate to develop algal biofuel technology in New England

Massachusetts-based renewable energy company, Bodega Algae, LLC, and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor, have received a six-month, $150,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation to develop and test a prototype for growing high concentrations of algae for use as biofuel.

A message on the state budget

State revenues are down due to the huge recession we are experiencing as a state and nation. As a result, since we are not going to raise taxes, and since the state must run a balanced budget, we have to cut another $438 million in this session. Since December 2008, the state has lost over $1 billion in revenue out of a $6 billion budget. Since about 80 percent of all the money that comes into the state is sent back to our towns, schools and to local health care providers, this loss of revenue is bound to have wide-spread negative economic and social impacts.

Historical Society gets $5,000 grant
to finish museum insulation project

The Boothbay Region Historical Society has been awarded a New Century Facilities matching grant to fund the final phase of insulation of the society’s museum at 72 Oak St., Boothbay Harbor. The funds come from the Maine State Legislature's New Century Community Program (NCCP), created in 1999 to provide matching grants and services to local cultural agencies.

"Lemon Tree" is next on Friends’ films series
