Newton Kirk Dilts, Jr.

Newton "Kirk" Dilts, Jr., 93, of West Boothbay Harbor died suddenly Saturday, December 27 at St. Andrews Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, March 21, 1915, the son of Newton K. Dilts, Sr. and Mae Akers Dilts. He graduated from Teaneck (NJ) High School and served as Sergeant in the Army’s U.S. Signal Corps during World War II. He married his sweetheart, Frances Johnson, on May 22, 1965.

He was a horticulturist most of his life, retiring to the Boothbay Region in 1986. In retirement, he maintained private gardens throughout the Boothbay area.

He was predeceased by his sister, Alvilda Muller and one son, Charles.

Surviving are his wife of West Harbor; sons Alan of West Virginia and Christopher and his wife, Cheryl of Wiscasset; a sister, Lillian Baehren of Rochester, New York; and two nieces.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Congregational Church in Boothbay Harbor at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 2. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset Special Needs Fund, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Linda Mitchell

Linda (Hill) Mitchell of Gardiner died Wednesday, December 23, 2008 at the Maine General Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Pickford, Mich. March 24, 1947 the daughter of James and Barbara (Nicholas) Hill. She graduated from Pickford High School in Michigan and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Michigan State University.

She had been employed as an English Teacher at Cony High School for many years and later on in life she was employed by Nicholson & Ryan Jewelers as assistant manager and later as manager. She also served as president of the Maine Jewelers Association.

She was a member of the Augusta Rotary Club, served on the board of directors of Gardiner Savings Bank, and the board of directors of the Maine State Museum.

Linda loved life and found enjoyment in many aspects of it. Her books, cats, dining, dancing, musical theater, touring, camping and fishing trips in the motor home were just some of her loves. Some of her greatest pleasures came during winter vacations to Sanibel Island, Florida. Summering at the cottage at Boothbay Harbor, where she spent many happy hours, especially while entertaining her grandchildren, was also a high point of enjoyment each year.

She was predeceased by her mother, Barbara (Nicholas) Hill.

Survivors include her husband, Nathan M. Mitchell of Gardiner; her father, James Hill and his wife Valarie of Pickford, Mich.; two step-sons, Scott Nathan Mitchell and his wife Deidre and their children Meredith Mitchell and George Mitchell of Skowhegan and Jeff Allen Mitchell and his wife Laura and their children Audrey Mitchell and Jack Mitchell of Golden, Colo.; two brothers, Nicholas Hill and his wife Laurel and their daughter Sasha Hill of Granville, Ohio and James Hill and his wife Cathy and their children Patricia Kipp and her husband Kyle, James J. Hill and Alyson Hill, all of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; a sister, Mary Jo Zeune and her husband Roger and their son Ian Zeune of Patasakla, Ohio and their daughter, Hillary Soto and her husband Johan of Las Vegas, Nev.

Friends may visit Monday, January 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St, Augusta, where funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 6 at 2 p.m. Burial will take place later in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.

Barbara L. Pinkham

Barbara L. Pinkham, 63, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, December 25 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Boothbay Harbor on July 27, 1945. She was the daughter of Roy and Thelma Nelson of Boothbay Harbor. Barbara attended East Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor schools. She was employed by Cap’n Fish’s motel and St. Andrew’s Hospital for many years. Her hobbies included shopping and playing cards with her friends. Barbara’s love for her friends and family was her life; she loved her children and grandchildren more than anything in the world. She also had a great love for animals.

Barbara is predeceased by the love of her life and husband of many years, Allen L. Pinkham, who died in 1994. She is also predeceased by her brother, Roy Nelson, of Boothbay. Barbara is survived by three daughters: Diana L. Holmes and husband James of Boothbay Harbor, Lynne M. Smith and husband Roger of Brunswick, and Michelle P. Harmon and husband Dale of East Boothbay; and two sons, Gary L. Manson Jr. of Brunswick and Wayne Manson of Boothbay Harbor. Barbara is survived by two sisters, Rebecca A. Lewis and husband Edgar of Boothbay Harbor and Katherine Nelson McCullough and husband Scott of Boothbay Harbor and her sister-in-law Kareen Nelson of Boothbay.

Barbara had many grandchildren whom she loved dearly, including Melissa Holmes of Boston, James Holmes of Boothbay Harbor, Heather and David Manson of Boothbay Harbor, Valerie, Ashley, and Brandon Smith of Brunswick, and Brooke and Brady Harmon of East Boothbay, whom she cared for throughout her illness. She also had one great-grandchild, Emma Holmes of Boothbay Harbor. Barbara will be missed by countless friends and family.

A memorial service was held for Barbara at the Boothbay fire station Sunday, December 28th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb.
