THE NOVEL JAZZ SEPTET will be performing a special birthday bash at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, Saturday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m., as they celebrate the 94th anniversary of Billy Strayhorn's birth. The special evening will exclusively feature works of two of the world's most prolific jazz composers, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The evening of the Novel Jazz concert, the downstairs bar at the Opera House will open at 7 p.m., serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages as well as coffee and dessert for a perfect autumn warmer. There also will be space for dancing during the show, for those who would like to both listen and move! Admission will be $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $5 for students under

SANDRA LOWERY’S 23 YEARS OF SERVICE was celebrated by co-workers, friends and Boothbay Harbor Post Office patrons at her surprise retirement (and birthday) party on October 28 at the Boothbay Fire Station. Postmaster Lesley Blethen related Lowery’s path from carrier to the front desk, briefly touched on Lowery’s ability to completely and thoroughly train the many new postal employees that passed through the Boothbay Harbor doors to stay, or be transferred to other offices, and her equal ability to handle anything. Blethen presented Lowery with a service award on behalf of the Northern New England District office thanking her for exemplary performance for 23 years – and, added the dry-quipping Lowrey, four months. Lowery’s last day behind the counter at the Oak Street office was Friday, October 30. Lowery, center is pictured above with Blethen, left and co-worker (and co-party conspirator) Jennifer Barry.
